Definition
Let be the set of microstates of a system with a fixed number of particles, and let be its energy. Let , where is the temperature and the Boltzmann constant.
- Discrete case: let be countable with . The canonical ensemble gives the probability .
- Classical case: let be the phase space of identical particles in a box . Let be finite, where is a constant with the units of action. The canonical ensemble has density with respect to Liouville measure .
The number is the canonical partition function, and is the Helmholtz free energy.
Remarks
The canonical ensemble is the Boltzmann distribution applied to the microstates of the whole system. It is a statistical ensemble in which the temperature, the volume and the particle number are fixed. Example: for independent two-level units with energies and , one gets . The mean energy is . Non-example: for a free particle on the whole line, , so no canonical ensemble exists; a finite box is needed. In quantum statistical mechanics the canonical ensemble is the density operator , when is trace class.
