Definition
Let be the set of microstates of a system and let be its energy.
- Discrete case: let be countable and let be a value of with finite. The microcanonical ensemble at energy is the uniform distribution on : it gives each such the probability .
- Classical case: let be a phase space with Lebesgue measure (Liouville measure) . Fix and a width , and let have finite positive measure. The microcanonical ensemble is the uniform probability measure on , with density .
It is a statistical ensemble in which the energy, the volume and the number of particles are fixed.
Remarks
Example: take two-level units, each with energy or , and the total energy with . Then , and each configuration with exactly excited units has probability . Non-example: the distribution that gives the configuration with excited units probability proportional to is not microcanonical, since it spreads over many energies. In the classical case one may also let and use the measure on the surface , where is surface measure. The microcanonical entropy is , with the Boltzmann constant.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
