Definition
Let be the set of microstates of a classical system, made into a measurable space. A statistical ensemble for the system is a probability measure on . The ensemble average of an integrable observable is its expected value . For a quantum system with Hilbert space , an ensemble is a density operator . This is a positive trace-class operator on with trace . The average of a bounded observable is then . An ensemble is stationary (an equilibrium ensemble) if it is invariant under the time evolution of the system.
Remarks
Example: for a system with finitely many microstates , any probability vector with and is an ensemble, and . Non-example: the weights for all with do not form an ensemble, since they sum to ; dividing by gives the uniform ensemble. In classical mechanics, let an ensemble have a density with respect to Liouville measure on phase space. It is stationary when is constant along trajectories. Any density of the form , with the Hamiltonian, is stationary.
