Linear response function

Builds on Hilbert spaceSelf-adjoint operatorCanonical ensemble

Definition

Let ℋ\mathcal{H} be a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, and let HH, AA and BB be self-adjoint operators on ℋ\mathcal{H}. Let ρ0\rho_0 be a state that commutes with HH, for example the canonical ensemble state. For a continuous function f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \R \to \R with compact support and ε∈ℝ\varepsilon \in \R, let ρε(t)\rho_\varepsilon(t) solve iℏ ∂tρε(t)=[H−εf(t)B,ρε(t)],i\hbar \, \partial_t \rho_\varepsilon(t) = [H - \varepsilon f(t) B, \rho_\varepsilon(t)], with ρε(t)=ρ0\rho_\varepsilon(t) = \rho_0 for all tt before the support of ff. The linear response function of AA to BB is the function χAB ⁣:ℝ→ℝ\chi_{AB} \colon \R \to \R such that, for every such ff and every tt, ddε∣ε=0tr⁡(ρε(t)A)=∫−∞∞χAB(t−s)f(s) ds.\frac{d}{d\varepsilon}\Big|_{\varepsilon = 0} \tr\big(\rho_\varepsilon(t) A\big) = \int_{-\infty}^{\infty} \chi_{AB}(t - s) f(s) \, ds.

Remarks

The function exists and is unique, and χAB(t)=0\chi_{AB}(t) = 0 for t<0t < 0; this is causality. Its Fourier transform χ~AB(ω)=∫0∞eiωtχAB(t) dt\tilde\chi_{AB}(\omega) = \int_0^\infty e^{i\omega t} \chi_{AB}(t)\, dt is the dynamical susceptibility, and it satisfies the Kramers–Kronig relations. Example: for a two-level system with H=ℏΩ2σzH = \tfrac{\hbar\Omega}{2}\sigma_z, A=B=σxA = B = \sigma_x and ρ0\rho_0 the ground state, one finds χAB(t)=2ℏθ(t)sin⁡(Ωt)\chi_{AB}(t) = \tfrac{2}{\hbar}\theta(t)\sin(\Omega t), which vanishes for t<0t < 0 as required. Non-example: the function ψ(t)=2ℏsin⁡(Ωt)\psi(t) = \tfrac{2}{\hbar}\sin(\Omega t) for all tt, without the factor θ(t)\theta(t), is not the linear response function of that system. Take ff supported in [1,2][1, 2] and t=0t = 0: the left side is 00 because the state has not yet been disturbed, while ∫ψ(−s)f(s) ds\int \psi(-s) f(s)\, ds is nonzero for suitable ff. In classical mechanics the same definition is used with a probability density on phase space and the Liouville equation in place of ρ\rho and the von Neumann equation.
