Lennard-Jones potential
Builds on Mayer f-functionHard spheres
Example
Let be the distance between two neutral atoms. The Lennard-Jones potential is the pair potential where is the depth of the well and is the distance at which vanishes. The term models short-range repulsion, and the term the van der Waals attraction.
Check of the shape: . The derivative is , which vanishes when , that is at . There , so , the minimum. As , , and as , from below.
Remarks
A classical fluid of particles with this pair potential is the standard test system for simulations by molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods. Its Mayer f-function is close to for well below , and positive near the well, so the second virial coefficient changes sign with temperature. Unlike hard spheres, the Lennard-Jones fluid has an attractive part and so shows a liquid–gas transition with a critical point.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
