Definition
Let be a monoidal category. A -enriched category (or -category) consists of:
- a class of objects;
- for each pair of objects , an object of , the hom-object;
- for each triple , a morphism of , the composition;
- for each object , a morphism of , the identity.
These data satisfy, for all objects :
- associativity: as morphisms ;
- units: and as morphisms and .
Remarks
Example: for , a -category is a locally small category; for , it is a preadditive category. Example: let , with a morphism exactly when , tensor product and unit . A -category is a set with numbers such that (composition) and (identities), so every metric space is one. Non-example: on , the function does not give a -category: composition fails, since is less than . The associativity and unit axioms are automatic in this example, because is a preorder.
