Definition
Let and be finite-dimensional complex Hilbert spaces. An entanglement witness is a Hermitian operator on such that:
- for every separable state on .
- for at least one density matrix on .
A state with is said to be detected by .
Remarks
Example: let and let be the swap operator, . For a product state, , and clause 1 follows by linearity. For the singlet , one has , so and clause 2 holds.
Non-example: the identity satisfies clause 1 but fails clause 2, since for every state. The operator fails clause 1, since .
Since the separable states form a compact convex set, the separating hyperplane theorem gives: for every entangled state there is a witness that detects .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
