Equalizer
Definition
Let be a category and let be two morphisms of . An equalizer of and is an object with a morphism such that:
- ;
- for every object and every morphism with , there is exactly one morphism with .
Remarks
An equalizer is the limit of the diagram formed by and , so it is unique up to unique isomorphism. It is a monomorphism: if , then and both solve clause 2 for , so .
Example: in the category of sets, let and let be the inclusion. Clause 1 holds by the choice of . If , every lies in , so works, and it is the only choice since is injective. In the category of abelian groups the equalizer of and is the kernel of with its inclusion.
Non-example: for with and , the inclusion satisfies clause 1 but not clause 2. The map with has but does not factor through .
