Equivalent matrices

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA and BB be m×nm \times n matrices over FF. The matrix BB is equivalent to AA when there are an invertible n×nn \times n matrix PP and an invertible m×mm \times m matrix QQ over FF with B=Q−1AP.B = Q^{-1} A P.

Remarks

Two matrices are equivalent if and only if they represent the same linear map Fn→FmF^n \to F^m in two pairs of bases. Two m×nm \times n matrices over a field are equivalent if and only if they have the same rank. A matrix of rank rr is equivalent to the block matrix (Ir000)\begin{pmatrix} I_r & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix}. Similarity is a finer relation: similar matrices are equivalent, but equivalent square matrices need not be similar.

Explanations

L1 human

Matrix equivalence allows independent changes of basis on the input side and on the output side. With so much freedom, only the rank survives. Every matrix of rank rr becomes the identity of size rr, padded with zeros.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
