Statement
For integers and , let be the complete -partite graph with parts of vertices each. Let and be integers and let be a real number. Then there is an integer such that every graph with vertices and at least edges contains a subgraph isomorphic to .
Remarks
The main consequence is a formula for the extremal number. Let be a graph with chromatic number . Then is a subgraph of for , and the Turán graph is -free, so For example, the Petersen graph has chromatic number , so a graph on vertices with no Petersen subgraph has at most edges. For bipartite () the formula only says ; the true order is the subject of the Zarankiewicz problem. A modern proof applies the Szemerédi regularity lemma to find a dense in the reduced graph, and then a counting lemma to blow it up to .

For a student
The theorem is often called the fundamental theorem of extremal graph theory. It gives for every graph with at least one edge. It is sharp for non-bipartite and degenerate for bipartite , where the extremal number is . Stability results refine it: an -free graph with nearly edges is close in structure to the Turán graph.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
