Definition
Let be a measure space and let be a measurable function. A number is an essential upper bound of if the set is a null set. The essential supremum of is the infimum of its essential upper bounds in the extended real line:
Remarks
Example: on with Lebesgue measure, let , the indicator function of the rationals. The set is countable, so it has measure , and . For the set is all of , so , while .
Non-example: the number is not an essential upper bound of on with Lebesgue measure. The set has measure . In fact .
The essential supremum is itself an essential upper bound, since is a countable union of the sets . The essential infimum is . The quantity is the norm of the space L-infinity.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
