Euclidean algorithm step for the greatest common divisor
Builds on Greatest common divisorDivision algorithmDivisibility
Statement
Let and be positive integers with . Divide by with the division algorithm. This gives the unique integers and with and .
If , then , where is the greatest common divisor.
If , then divides , and .
Remarks
The first case lets us replace the pair by the smaller pair without changing the gcd. The second case ends the process.
