Evanescent field
Builds on Plane wave
Definition
Let a homogeneous lossless medium fill the half-space , and let be the wavenumber of free waves of angular frequency in it. Let be a constant, real, and . Consider the function It solves the Helmholtz equation , and it is called an evanescent wave in this region. An evanescent field is a superposition of such waves. More generally, it is a field near a surface that oscillates along the surface and decays exponentially away from it.
Remarks
Check: substituting gives , which holds by the choice of . The wave vector is formally the complex vector , whose "length squared" equals . Example: consider total internal reflection from index to at angle above the critical angle, with vacuum wavenumber . The field in medium has and decay rate . Non-example: if , the same ansatz needs purely imaginary, and is a propagating plane wave that carries power away from the surface.
