Evanescent field
Summary
An evanescent field is an oscillating field that does not propagate away from its source or from a surface but decays exponentially with distance. It arises when a wave is forced to oscillate along a surface faster than a free wave of the same frequency can. Evanescent fields appear beyond a totally reflecting surface, in waveguides below cutoff and near small sources. A single evanescent wave carries no time-averaged power in its direction of decay.
