Definition
Let the plane separate a non-magnetic dielectric in from a non-magnetic metal in . At the angular frequency , let their relative permittivities be the real numbers and . Let , where is the speed of light in vacuum. A surface plasmon polariton is a nonzero solution of the source-free Maxwell's equations with time factor such that:
- it is transverse magnetic: for a real ;
- it decays exponentially away from the interface on both sides, as for and for , with ;
- it satisfies the interface conditions at .
Such a solution exists exactly when , and then
Remarks
Check: each half has , and continuity of and of gives . With this forces , and squaring and solving gives the formula for , which is real and larger than exactly when . So on each side the wave is an evanescent field. Example: a metal in the Drude model with against vacuum () supports the wave for . Non-example: a transverse electric field ( along ) cannot be bound to such an interface, because continuity of and of its normal derivative would need . For real metals has an imaginary part, becomes complex, and the wave decays along the surface too.
