Double integral

Definition

Let R=[a,b]×[c,d]R = [a, b] \times [c, d] with a<ba < b and c<dc < d, and let f ⁣:R→Rf \colon R \to \mathbb{R} be bounded. Choose partitions a=x0<⋯<xk=ba = x_0 < \dots < x_k = b and c=y0<⋯<yl=dc = y_0 < \dots < y_l = d, and let Rij=[xi−1,xi]×[yj−1,yj]R_{ij} = [x_{i-1}, x_i] \times [y_{j-1}, y_j] with area ΔAij=(xi−xi−1)(yj−yj−1)\Delta A_{ij} = (x_i - x_{i-1})(y_j - y_{j-1}). For points pij∈Rijp_{ij} \in R_{ij}, the sum S=∑i,jf(pij) ΔAijS = \sum_{i, j} f(p_{ij}) \, \Delta A_{ij} is a Riemann sum of ff. The function ff is Riemann integrable on RR if there is I∈RI \in \mathbb{R} with the following property. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 such that ∣S−I∣<ε|S - I| < \varepsilon for all such sums whose rectangles have diameter less than δ\delta. Then II is the double integral of ff over RR, written ∬Rf(x,y) dA\iint_R f(x, y) \, dA or ∬Rf(x,y) dx dy\iint_R f(x, y) \, dx \, dy.

Remarks

Each continuous function on RR is Riemann integrable on RR. For a bounded region D⊆RD \subseteq R, one integrates f1Df \mathbf{1}_D over RR, where 1D\mathbf{1}_D is 11 on DD and 00 elsewhere. This gives integrals over non-rectangular regions. In practice one computes double integrals as iterated integrals, by Fubini's theorem. For example, ∬[0,1]2xy dA=∫01∫01xy dy dx=1/4\iint_{[0, 1]^2} x y \, dA = \int_0^1 \int_0^1 x y \, dy \, dx = 1/4. The integral is linear in ff, and ∬R1 dA=(b−a)(d−c)\iint_R 1 \, dA = (b - a)(d - c) is the area of RR.

Explanations

L1 human

Cut the rectangle into small pieces, multiply the area of each piece by a value of ff in it, and add. As the pieces get smaller, these sums approach the double integral. For f≥0f \ge 0 this is the volume under the graph of ff.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
