Exact couple
Builds on Abelian groupExact sequence
Definition
An exact couple consists of two abelian groups and and three homomorphisms such that the triangle is exact at each vertex:
- ;
- ;
- .
Remarks
The map satisfies , by clause 2. The derived couple has and , with the restriction of , and ; it is again an exact couple. Iterating gives groups with differentials such that is the homology of , that is, a spectral sequence. In practice and are bigraded, and the bidegrees of fix the bidegree of each .
Example: let be a chain complex of free abelian groups and a prime. The short exact sequence gives a long exact sequence in homology. It is an exact couple with , , multiplication by , reduction mod and the connecting map.
Non-example: take with , and . Clause 1 holds, since , and clause 2 holds, since . Clause 3 fails, since while .
Exact couples were introduced by William S. Massey.
