Definition
Let be a commutative ring. Consider a finite or infinite sequence of -modules and -linear maps The sequence is exact at if , where is the image and the kernel. The sequence is exact if it is exact at every module that has both an incoming and an outgoing map. A short exact sequence is an exact sequence of the form .
Remarks
A sequence is exact exactly when is injective, is surjective, and ; then . Exactness of means that is injective, and exactness of means that is surjective. Exactness at implies , but not conversely.
Example: , with the reduction, is a short exact sequence of -modules. Multiplication by is injective, is onto, and .
Non-example: the sequence , with the reduction modulo , is not exact at the middle term. The image of the first map is , but .
