Exceptional collection
Builds on FieldTriangulated category
Definition
Let be a field and let be a -linear triangulated category with shift . An object of is exceptional if and for every integer . An exceptional collection is a sequence of objects of such that:
- each is exceptional;
- for all and all integers .
The collection is full if the smallest triangulated subcategory of that contains and is closed under isomorphisms is itself. It is strong if moreover for all and all .
Remarks
Example: on the projective space over , the line bundles form a full strong exceptional collection. It lives in the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves, and this is a theorem of Beilinson. Clause 2 holds since , and for all cohomology of vanishes. Non-example: on an elliptic curve over , no line bundle is exceptional, since . A full exceptional collection gives a semiorthogonal decomposition , where is the subcategory generated by , equivalent to the bounded derived category of finite-dimensional vector spaces over .
