Existence of limits from products and equalizers

Builds on CategoryProductEqualizerLimitComplete categoryFinitely complete category

Statement

Let π’ž\mathcal{C} be a category that has equalizers of all pairs of parallel morphisms.

  1. If π’ž\mathcal{C} has all small products, then π’ž\mathcal{C} is complete.
  2. If π’ž\mathcal{C} has all finite products, then π’ž\mathcal{C} is finitely complete.

Remarks

Let F ⁣:Jβ†’π’žF \colon J \to \mathcal{C} be a diagram with JJ small, and write u ⁣:jβ†’ku \colon j \to k for the morphisms of JJ. Form the products P=∏jF(j)P = \prod_{j} F(j) over the objects and Q=∏u ⁣:jβ†’kF(k)Q = \prod_{u \colon j \to k} F(k) over the morphisms. Two morphisms s,t ⁣:Pβ†’Qs, t \colon P \to Q are given on the factor of u ⁣:jβ†’ku \colon j \to k by F(u)βˆ˜Ο€jF(u) \circ \pi_j and by Ο€k\pi_k. The equalizer of ss and tt is a limit of FF. If JJ is finite, only finite products are used.

The converse is clear, since products and equalizers are limits. For example, in the category of groups the limit of a diagram is the subgroup of the product cut out by the equations F(u)(xj)=xkF(u)(x_j) = x_k. Dually, a category with all small coproducts and all coequalizers is cocomplete.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the usual way to prove that a category is complete. For sets, groups, rings and topological spaces the products and equalizers are easy to write down, and the theorem does the rest. The same construction shows that a functor which preserves products and equalizers preserves all limits. It also gives the finite version: a terminal object, binary products and equalizers give all finite limits.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
