Extension and contraction of ideals
Builds on Commutative ringRing homomorphismIdealIdeal generated by a subset
Definition
Let and be commutative rings and let be a ring homomorphism.
- For an ideal of , the extension of is the ideal generated by in :
- For an ideal of , the contraction of is the preimage , an ideal of .
Remarks
The relations , , and hold. If is a prime ideal of , then is a prime ideal of , because embeds into the integral domain . Example: for the inclusion , , since contains and is a proper ideal containing . Non-example of the analogous property for extension: is prime in , but is not prime, since lies in it while does not. The image itself need not be an ideal of ; for , the image of is not an ideal of , and its extension is all of .
