Functions of a complex variable Function spaces and the unit disc Theorem
F. and M. Riesz theorem
Builds on Hardy spacePoisson kernel
Statement
Let be a complex measure on the Borel sets of , viewed as the unit circle. For let . Assume that for every integer . Then is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. Moreover for an integrable function whose Poisson integral is holomorphic on the unit disc and belongs to the Hardy space .
Remarks
Proof idea: the Poisson integral of is , a holomorphic function. Its integrals are bounded by the total variation of , so . A function in has boundary values with in , a fact that uses the inner-outer factorization. Hence the measures converge both to and to , and .
Example: if is a point mass at , then for all , so the hypothesis fails, as it must since a point mass is not absolutely continuous.
A consequence: if is a domain bounded by a rectifiable Jordan curve, then harmonic measure on and arc length have the same null sets.

For a student
The theorem identifies the analytic measures on the circle with the boundary values of functions. It is a key step in the theory of Hardy spaces and in the study of boundary behaviour of conformal maps. Its consequence for rectifiable Jordan domains links the harmonic measure with arc length.
