Factorial

Definition

Let nn be a natural number. The factorial of nn is the natural number n!n! defined by the recursion 0!=1,(n+1)!=(n+1)⋅n!.0! = 1, \qquad (n+1)! = (n+1) \cdot n!. For n≥1n \ge 1 this gives n!=1⋅2⋯nn! = 1 \cdot 2 \cdots n, the product of the positive integers up to nn.

Remarks

The first values are 0!=10! = 1, 1!=11! = 1, 2!=22! = 2, 3!=63! = 6, 4!=244! = 24 and 5!=1205! = 120. The value n!n! is the number of permutations of an nn-element set. The convention 0!=10! = 1 agrees with the empty product, and it makes the factorial formula for binomial coefficients true for k=0k = 0 and k=nk = n.

Explanations

L1 human

The factorial n!n! multiplies all whole numbers from 11 to nn. It counts the ways to put nn different books in a row: nn choices for the first place, n−1n - 1 for the second, and so on.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
