Definition
Consider non-interacting electrons in a crystal with band functions , , on the Brillouin zone . Let be the Fermi energy, the chemical potential at zero temperature fixed by the electron density. The Fermi surface is the set At zero temperature, by Fermi–Dirac statistics, the states with are occupied and those with are empty. So is the boundary of the occupied region in each band.
Remarks
Example: free electrons in with . The Fermi surface is the sphere with . Counting two spin states per wave vector, the density is , so .
Example: for the one-dimensional tight-binding band at half filling, and the Fermi surface is the pair of points .
Non-example: in a band insulator lies in a spectral gap, so no takes the value and the Fermi surface is empty.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
