Definition

Let AA be a commutative ring and let BB be a commutative AA-algebra. The algebra BB is finitely presented over AA if it has a presentation with finitely many generators and relations. That means there are an integer n≥0n \ge 0 and a finitely generated ideal I=(g1,…,gm)I = (g_1, \ldots, g_m) of the polynomial ring A[x1,…,xn]A[x_1, \ldots, x_n] with B≅A[x1,…,xn]/IB \cong A[x_1, \ldots, x_n]/I as AA-algebras. Here A[x1,…,xn]/IA[x_1, \ldots, x_n]/I is the quotient ring.

Remarks

Example: ℤ[i]\Z[i] is finitely presented over ℤ\Z, since ℤ[i]≅ℤ[x]/(x2+1)\Z[i] \cong \Z[x]/(x^2 + 1) and the ideal (x2+1)(x^2 + 1) is generated by one element.

Non-example: let A=k[y1,y2,…]A = k[y_1, y_2, \ldots] be a polynomial ring over a field kk in countably many variables, and let B=A/(y1,y2,…)≅kB = A/(y_1, y_2, \ldots) \cong k. Then BB is of finite type over AA, generated by no elements at all, but it is not finitely presented. If an algebra is finitely presented, then the kernel of every surjection A[x1,…,xn]→BA[x_1, \ldots, x_n] \to B is finitely generated, and the kernel of A→BA \to B is (y1,y2,…)(y_1, y_2, \ldots), which is not.

If AA is Noetherian, every finite type AA-algebra is finitely presented, because every ideal of A[x1,…,xn]A[x_1, \ldots, x_n] is finitely generated by Hilbert's basis theorem.
