Fock space
Description
Let be a complex Hilbert space. For , let be the tensor product of copies of , and let . The full Fock space over is the Hilbert sum Let and be the orthogonal projections of onto its symmetric and antisymmetric tensors. The bosonic Fock space is , and the fermionic Fock space is . Each of them is a Hilbert space. Indeed, each summand is a closed subspace of , and a Hilbert sum of Hilbert spaces is a Hilbert space.
Remarks
The summand of degree is the space of states with exactly particles; the vector is the vacuum. For , every symmetric power has dimension , so is isomorphic to . For the same , the antisymmetric part vanishes for , so ; this reflects the Pauli exclusion principle. Creation and annihilation operators act on Fock space by raising and lowering the degree .
