Definition

A forcing notion is a partial order (P,≤)(P, \le) with a greatest element 11. Its elements are called conditions, and q≤pq \le p is read "qq is stronger than pp".

Let MM be a countable transitive model of ZFC with P∈MP \in M. A PP-name is a set τ\tau of pairs (σ,p)(\sigma, p), where σ\sigma is a PP-name and p∈Pp \in P; this is a definition by recursion on rank. For a filter G⊆PG \subseteq P, the value of a name is defined by recursion: τG={σG:(σ,p)∈τ for some p∈G}.\tau^G = \set{\sigma^G : (\sigma, p) \in \tau \text{ for some } p \in G}. For a generic filter GG over MM, the forcing extension is M[G]={τG:τ∈M is a P-name}M[G] = \set{\tau^G : \tau \in M \text{ is a } P\text{-name}}. Let p∈Pp \in P, let φ(x1,…,xn)\varphi(x_1, \ldots, x_n) be a formula, and let τ1,…,τn∈M\tau_1, \ldots, \tau_n \in M be names. The condition pp forces φ(τ1,…,τn)\varphi(\tau_1, \ldots, \tau_n), written p⊩φ(τ1,…,τn)p \Vdash \varphi(\tau_1, \ldots, \tau_n), if M[G]⊨φ(τ1G,…,τnG)M[G] \models \varphi(\tau_1^G, \ldots, \tau_n^G) for every generic GG over MM with p∈Gp \in G.

Remarks

The basic theorem of forcing says that M[G]M[G] is a countable transitive model of ZFC, that M⊆M[G]M \subseteq M[G] and G∈M[G]G \in M[G], and that MM and M[G]M[G] have the same ordinals. The forcing theorem says that a statement holds in M[G]M[G] if and only if some p∈Gp \in G forces it. It also says that the relation ⊩\Vdash restricted to each formula is definable in MM. Example: Cohen forcing is the set of finite partial functions from ω\omega to {0,1}\set{0, 1}, ordered by reverse inclusion, with 1=∅1 = \emptyset. For a generic GG, the union ⋃G\bigcup G is a function from ω\omega to {0,1}\set{0, 1} that is not in MM. A non-example of a forcing notion is a partial order without a greatest element; this is a minor point, since one can add a new top element. Some authors use preorders instead of partial orders, or write p≤qp \le q for "pp is weaker", so the notation must be checked in each source.
