Negation

Definition

Let pp be a proposition. The negation of pp is the proposition ¬p\neg p, read "not pp". The proposition ¬p\neg p is true when pp is false, and ¬p\neg p is false when pp is true.

pp ¬p\neg p

F T

Remarks

Other notations for ¬p\neg p are ∼p\sim p and p‾\overline{p}. In classical logic, ¬¬p\neg \neg p has the same truth value as pp. This is the double negation law.

Explanations

L1 human

To negate a sentence, say that it is not the case. The negation of "55 is prime" is "55 is not prime". The first sentence is true, so its negation is false.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Proposition concept
  2. Negation definition

What depends on this

25 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
