Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let AA be a commutative RR-algebra. Then AA is formally smooth over RR, and the structure map R→AR \to A is a formally smooth map, if the following holds. Let CC be a commutative RR-algebra and let J⊆CJ \subseteq C be an ideal with J2=0J^2 = 0. Let π ⁣:C→C/J\pi \colon C \to C/J be the quotient map, and let u ⁣:A→C/Ju \colon A \to C/J be an RR-algebra homomorphism. The condition is that for every such CC, JJ and uu there is an RR-algebra homomorphism v ⁣:A→Cv \colon A \to C with π∘v=u\pi \circ v = u.

Remarks

The lift vv need not be unique. If the lift always exists and is unique, AA is formally étale over RR; if it is always unique, AA is formally unramified over RR.

Example: let A=R[xi:i∈I]A = R[x_i : i \in I] be a polynomial ring in any set of variables. Given u ⁣:A→C/Ju \colon A \to C/J, choose for each ii an element ci∈Cc_i \in C with π(ci)=u(xi)\pi(c_i) = u(x_i), and let vv be the RR-algebra map with v(xi)=civ(x_i) = c_i. Then π∘v\pi \circ v and uu agree on the variables, so they are equal.

Non-example: let kk be a field and A=k[x]/(x2)A = k[x]/(x^2). Take C=k[x]/(x3)C = k[x]/(x^3) and J=(x2)/(x3)J = (x^2)/(x^3), so J2=0J^2 = 0 and C/J=AC/J = A, and let uu be the identity of AA. A lift vv would send xx to x+ax2x + a x^2 for some a∈ka \in k, and then v(x)2=x2≠0v(x)^2 = x^2 \ne 0 in CC, while v(x2)=v(0)=0v(x^2) = v(0) = 0. So no lift exists, and AA is not formally smooth over kk.
