Fortuin–Kasteleyn random cluster model
Definition
Let be a finite graph, let and let . For a subset , let be the number of connected components of the graph , isolated vertices included. The random cluster measure on is the probability measure on the subsets of given by where . The edges in are called open.
Remarks
For the factor is , and is Bernoulli bond percolation: each edge is open independently with probability . For integer and , the Edwards–Sokal coupling relates to the -state Potts model with energy at inverse temperature . Under this coupling, is the law of the open edges, and the Potts spins are obtained by giving each open cluster an independent uniform colour. Two Potts spins at and are then correlated through the event that and lie in the same open cluster. Non-example: the measure proportional to is not of this form for , since its extra weight counts edges, not components; it is just Bernoulli percolation with another parameter. The partition function is, up to a change of variables, the Tutte polynomial of .
