Definition
Represent a rigid motion of , with and , by the matrix ; these matrices form the Euclidean group . Let a serial chain consist of links , with link fixed. Link and link are joined by a joint with a real variable ranging over a set . For each , let give the pose of a frame fixed in link relative to a frame fixed in link . The forward kinematics map of the chain is the following map. Its value is the pose of the frame of link relative to the frame of link , computed by matrix multiplication.
Remarks
Example: a planar arm with two revolute joints and links of lengths , seen in the plane . Here is the rotation by about the -axis followed by the translation by along the rotated -axis. The product gives the hand position and orientation angle .
Non-example: in a closed chain such as a four-bar linkage the joint variables are linked by loop equations. So they do not range over a product , and no such product formula describes the chain. The joint space is the configuration space of the serial chain. The derivative of is the manipulator Jacobian, which relates joint velocities to the velocity of the end link.
