Four-bar linkage
Builds on Chebychev–Grübler–Kutzbach criterionInstant centre of rotation
Example
A planar four-bar linkage consists of four rigid bars joined in a closed loop by four revolute joints in the plane. One bar, the ground link, is fixed, and the bar opposite to it is the coupler. The two others are the crank and the rocker, each pivoted on the ground.
Mobility check: there are links and joints, each with . The Chebychev–Grübler–Kutzbach criterion gives . Indeed, for generic bar lengths, the angle of the crank fixes the other positions up to at most two choices. These are the two ways of closing a triangle.
Grashof condition: let and be the shortest and the longest bar lengths, and , the other two. If , then the shortest bar can make full turns relative to its two neighbours. If , no bar makes a full turn relative to another.
Remarks
Points of the coupler trace coupler curves, which are algebraic curves of degree at most . Watt's linkage, a four-bar linkage, traces an approximate straight line; an exact straight line needs more bars, as in the Peaucellier–Lipkin linkage. The instant centre of the coupler relative to the ground is the intersection of the crank line and the rocker line.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
