Relativity and gravitational theory Definition
Four-velocity
Definition
Let be a timelike world line in Minkowski space, parametrised by its proper time , so that with in inertial coordinates . The four-velocity at proper time is the four-vector If the world line is written as with velocity , then where is the Lorentz factor of .
Remarks
Example: for , and . Check: . In general , because and . Non-example: the derivative with respect to coordinate time is not the four-velocity: it is not a four-vector, and its squared length depends on the frame. The four-momentum of a particle of mass is .
