Fourier–Mukai transform
Builds on Projective varietyDerived category of coherent sheavesDerived functor
Definition
Let be a field and let and be smooth projective varieties over . Let be the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on , and let and be the projections. For an object of , the Fourier–Mukai transform with kernel is the functor Here is the pullback, which is exact since is flat. The symbols and denote the derived tensor product and the derived pushforward, which are derived functors.
Remarks
is an exact functor of triangulated categories, and composites of Fourier–Mukai transforms are again Fourier–Mukai transforms, with kernel given by a convolution of the kernels. Example: for and , the structure sheaf of the diagonal , one has for the diagonal embedding , and , so . For an abelian variety with dual and Poincaré line bundle on , Mukai proved that is an equivalence. An example that is not an equivalence when : for , flat base change gives . So every object goes to a sum of shifts of , and the structure sheaf of a closed point of is not in the image.
