Definition

Let a body of thermal diffusivity α>0\alpha > 0 conduct heat, and let L>0L > 0 be a characteristic length of the body. For a time t≥0t \ge 0, the Fourier number is the dimensionless number Fo=α tL2.\mathrm{Fo} = \frac{\alpha \, t}{L^2}.

Remarks

The substitution τ=αt/L2\tau = \alpha t / L^2 and ξ=x/L\xi = x / L turns the heat equation ∂tT=αΔxT\partial_t T = \alpha \Delta_x T into ∂τT=ΔξT\partial_\tau T = \Delta_\xi T. So Fo\mathrm{Fo} is the time variable of the dimensionless heat equation.

Example: a steel plate with α=1.2⋅10−5\alpha = 1.2 \cdot 10^{-5} square metres per second and half-thickness L=0.01L = 0.01 metres, after t=10t = 10 seconds. Then Fo=1.2⋅10−5⋅10/10−4=1.2\mathrm{Fo} = 1.2 \cdot 10^{-5} \cdot 10 / 10^{-4} = 1.2.

Non-example: αt/L\alpha t / L is not the Fourier number; it has the unit of a length, so it is not dimensionless.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
