Definition
Let be a locally compact group. The Fourier–Stieltjes algebra is the set of functions of the form for . Here is a continuous unitary representation of on a Hilbert space and . The norm is over all such representations of . The operations are pointwise addition and multiplication.
Remarks
The set is closed under sums, by using direct sums of representations, and under products, by using tensor products. With the norm it is a commutative Banach algebra with unit the constant function , coming from the trivial representation. Pairing with by identifies isometrically with the dual of the full group C*-algebra . It is the linear span of the continuous positive-definite functions on . The Fourier algebra is a closed ideal of , and exactly when is compact.
Example: . A unitary representation of is given by one unitary operator . By the spectral theorem, for a finite complex measure on the circle, and every finite measure arises in this way. So is the algebra of Fourier–Stieltjes coefficient sequences of finite measures on .
Non-example: the function on is not in . Every coefficient function is bounded, since , and is unbounded.
