Fractional calculus
Builds on Riemann–Liouville integralGamma functionHigher derivative
Definition
Let and let be a locally integrable real function on . For a real number , the fractional integral of order of is the Riemann–Liouville integral where is the gamma function. For let . The Riemann–Liouville fractional derivative of order is whenever the right side exists, with . Fractional calculus is the study of these operators and of their variants, for real or complex orders .
Remarks
For a positive integer , is the -fold iterated integral of from , and is the ordinary higher derivative . Example: with and , . Non-example: for the integral formula is not defined, since is not defined; the operator is set to be the identity by convention. The fractional integrals satisfy for . Other fractional derivatives, such as the Caputo derivative and the Grünwald–Letnikov derivative, agree with on suitable classes of functions.
