Frame fields in general relativity
Builds on SpacetimeVector fieldOrthonormal basis
Definition
Let be a spacetime of signature and let be open. A frame field (or tetrad) on is a quadruple of smooth vector fields on such that:
- for all , where .
- is future-directed.
So at each point the vectors form an orthonormal basis of with timelike vector .
Remarks
The dual coframe is the quadruple of one-forms with , and then , summed over . Example: for the Schwarzschild metric with , on the region , , the static frame is , , , ; for example . Non-example: the coordinate fields there are not a frame field, since in general. Two frame fields on differ at each point by a Lorentz transformation, . The integral curves of are the world lines of the observers that the frame field describes.
