Free spectrum of a variety

Definition
Let be a variety, and for each natural number let be the free algebra of on a set of generators. The free spectrum of is the function with values in .
Remarks
The values are all finite exactly when is a locally finite variety. When is generated by a finite algebra , the free algebra embeds in , so . Example: for Boolean algebras, , since is the algebra of all Boolean functions . Example: for semilattices, , since is the set of nonempty subsets of the generators under union. Non-example: the variety of all groups has no finite spectrum value for , since the free group on one generator is . Some authors start the spectrum at , or use the related function .
