Froude number

Builds on Dimensionless numbers in fluid mechanics

Definition

Consider a flow under gravity with acceleration gg, and let UU be a characteristic speed and LL a characteristic length of the flow. The Froude number is Fr=UgL.\mathrm{Fr} = \frac{U}{\sqrt{g L}}. For flow in an open channel of depth hh, one takes L=hL = h; the flow is subcritical if Fr<1\mathrm{Fr} < 1 and supercritical if Fr>1\mathrm{Fr} > 1.

Remarks

It is a dimensionless number: [gL]=𝖫2𝖳−2=[U2][g L] = \mathsf{L}^2 \mathsf{T}^{-2} = [U^2]. Some authors call U2/(gL)U^2 / (g L) the Froude number; this is the square of the definition above. Example: water of depth h=0.1 mh = 0.1\ \mathrm{m} flowing at U=2 m/sU = 2\ \mathrm{m/s} has Fr=2/0.981≈2.0\mathrm{Fr} = 2 / \sqrt{0.981} \approx 2.0, so the flow is supercritical. Non-example: U/(gL)U / (g L) is not a Froude number; it has dimension 𝖫−1𝖳\mathsf{L}^{-1} \mathsf{T}. In shallow water, gh\sqrt{g h} is the speed of long surface waves, so Fr\mathrm{Fr} compares the current with the wave speed.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
