Let be a topological space. A subset is a set if there are open sets of with
Remarks
Every open set is : take for all . In a metric space with metric , every closed set is , since .
Example: the set of irrational numbers is . Each is open and is countable, so the irrationals form a set.
Non-example: is not a subset of . If with open, each is open and dense, and so are the sets for . These countably many dense open sets have empty intersection, which contradicts the Baire category theorem.
A set is if and only if its complement is an F-sigma set.
