Statement

Let AA be a commutative Henselian local ring with residue field kk, and let ℓ≥2\ell \ge 2 be an integer that is invertible in AA. Then for every n≥0n \ge 0 the quotient map A→kA \to k induces an isomorphism Kn(A;ℤ/ℓ)→Kn(k;ℤ/ℓ)K_n(A; \Z/\ell) \to K_n(k; \Z/\ell) of K-groups with coefficients in ℤ/ℓ\Z/\ell.

Remarks

Gabber proved the theorem in the more general setting of Henselian pairs (A,I)(A, I), comparing AA with A/IA/I. The proof develops the specialization argument of Suslin's rigidity theorem, with the Henselian property used to lift points from the residue field to the ring.

At work: the ring of pp-adic integers ℤp\Z_p is Henselian with residue field 𝔽p\F_p. For ℓ\ell prime to pp, the theorem gives Kn(ℤp;ℤ/ℓ)≅Kn(𝔽p;ℤ/ℓ)K_n(\Z_p; \Z/\ell) \cong K_n(\F_p; \Z/\ell), known from Quillen's computation for finite fields.

The hypothesis that ℓ\ell is invertible is necessary. Let pp be odd and ℓ=p\ell = p. Then K1(ℤp;ℤ/p)=ℤp×/(ℤp×)p≅ℤ/pK_1(\Z_p; \Z/p) = \Z_p^\times/(\Z_p^\times)^p \cong \Z/p, since ℤp×≅μp−1×(1+pℤp)\Z_p^\times \cong \mu_{p-1} \times (1 + p\Z_p) and 1+pℤp≅ℤp1 + p\Z_p \cong \Z_p. But K1(𝔽p;ℤ/p)=𝔽p×/(𝔽p×)p=0K_1(\F_p; \Z/p) = \F_p^\times/(\F_p^\times)^p = 0, because 𝔽p×\F_p^\times has order p−1p - 1, prime to pp.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem computes the stalks of mod ℓ\ell K-theory in the étale topology. The local rings there are strictly Henselian, so their mod ℓ\ell K-groups are those of separably closed fields. This is the starting point of the comparison between algebraic K-theory and étale cohomology, in étale K-theory and the Quillen–Lichtenbaum conjecture. It extends Suslin's rigidity theorem for extensions of algebraically closed fields.
