Definition
Let be or , and let and be normed vector spaces over . Let be open, let , let and let . The Gateaux differential of at in the direction is the limit taken over , when this limit exists in . The map is Gateaux differentiable at if exists for every and is a continuous linear map . This map is the Gateaux derivative of at .
Remarks
For and , is the directional derivative of along . Some authors do not ask to be linear or continuous. The definition works without change for locally convex spaces. If has a Fréchet derivative , then is Gateaux differentiable at with .
Example: let be a real Hilbert space and . Then , so , which is continuous and linear in .
Non-example: on , let and . For , , so exists for every . But is not linear, so is not Gateaux differentiable at .
A Gateaux differentiable map need not be Fréchet differentiable. On , let when and , and elsewhere. Each line through meets the parabola in at most one point other than , so for all . But is not continuous at .
