Mechanics of particles and systems Definition
Generalized force
Builds on Generalized coordinates
Definition
Consider point particles with positions , given in terms of generalized coordinates and time by smooth maps . Let be the applied force on particle . The generalized force associated with is
Remarks
Equivalently, is the virtual work of the applied forces for the virtual displacement at fixed time. Example: a pendulum of length and mass has and force , so . If the forces derive from a potential, , then by the chain rule . Non-example: the sum is not a generalized force, because it does not weigh each force by the displacement . For the pendulum it gives instead of . Forces of ideal constraints do not contribute to the generalized forces, because they are orthogonal to all virtual displacements.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
