Definition
Let be a field and let be a commutative nonassociative algebra over of finite dimension . The algebra is a genetic algebra if it has a basis with structure constants , defined by , such that:
- .
- for all and .
- for all and .
Remarks
Several closely related definitions are in use; this one asks for a basis in which the multiplication is triangular. The linear map with and for is then a weight, so is a baric algebra. Indeed, the conditions force to have weight and all other products of basis vectors to have weight .
Example: the gametic algebra with basis over , , , . Take and . Then , , and , so all three clauses hold.
Non-example: with the componentwise product is not genetic. For a basis as above, is a weight and clause 3 gives for the vector that spans . But the only weights on are the two coordinate projections, and the kernel of each is spanned by an idempotent , with . So with and , a contradiction.
