Definition
Let be a closed orientable surface, that is, a compact connected orientable surface without boundary. Call simple closed curves in non-separating when they are pairwise disjoint and is connected. The genus is the largest integer for which such curves exist.
Remarks
The genus is finite and satisfies , where is the Euler characteristic. By the classification of surfaces, is homeomorphic to the sphere if , and to the connected sum of tori if .
Example: for the torus , the curve has connected complement , an open annulus. Any two disjoint simple closed curves in the torus disconnect it, so , in accord with . Non-example of a non-separating curve: on the sphere every simple closed curve separates the sphere into two pieces, by the Jordan curve theorem, so .
For a closed non-orientable surface, the non-orientable genus is the number of copies of in its connected sum decomposition; then .
