Definition
Let be a Noetherian scheme of finite Krull dimension. For let be the set of points of codimension , that is, with . Let be the residue field of . Let be Quillen's algebraic K-groups, with for . Let be the K-theory of coherent sheaves. The filtration of coherent sheaves by codimension of support gives Quillen's coniveau spectral sequence For , the Gersten complex of in degree is the row of its page. It is the chain complex The same construction applies to for a Noetherian local ring . Applied to each open subset of , it gives a complex of sheaves on .
Remarks
Each differential is a sum of components , which are unless lies in the closure of and has codimension one more. Suppose has codimension one in the closure of , and the local ring of that closure at is a discrete valuation ring. Then the component is the valuation, and is the tame symbol.
Example: for and the complex is , . Its kernel is , and it is surjective.
The augmented complex for a regular local ring with fraction field is the subject of the Gersten conjecture.
