Gibbs entropy
Definition
Let a statistical ensemble be a probability distribution on a countable set of microstates. Let be the Boltzmann constant. The Gibbs entropy of the ensemble is with the convention ; the sum lies in . For a classical ensemble with density on phase space, one sets , where is a fixed unit of phase-space volume.
Remarks
Example: the uniform distribution on states has , so . A distribution concentrated on one state has . Non-example: the weights on three states sum to , so they are not a probability distribution and their Gibbs entropy is not defined. For a quantum ensemble with density operator , the analogue is the von Neumann entropy . The continuous version depends on the choice of the unit and can be negative, unlike the discrete one.
