Girth
Builds on GraphCycleAcyclic graph
Definition
Let be a graph. If contains a cycle, the girth of is the smallest length of a cycle in . If contains no cycle, that is, if is acyclic, the girth of is .
Remarks
In a simple graph each cycle has length at least , so the girth is at least . Example: the cycle graph with has girth , since its only cycle has length . The complete graph with has girth , and the complete bipartite graph with has girth , since a bipartite graph has no odd cycle. The Petersen graph has girth . Non-example: in the path graph , the closed walk has length but is not a cycle, because it uses the edge twice. The path graph has no cycle, so its girth is . Every tree has girth . The girth is sometimes written .
