Definition

A global field is a field KK of one of the following two kinds.

  1. KK is a finite extension of the rational numbers โ„š\Q; then KK is a number field.
  2. KK is a finite extension of the field ๐”ฝq(t)\F_q(t) of rational functions in one variable tt over a finite field ๐”ฝq\F_q. Then KK is a global function field.

Remarks

Example: โ„š(2)\Q(\sqrt{2}) is a global field, because it has degree 22 over โ„š\Q. Example: ๐”ฝ3(t)\F_3(t) itself is a global function field, of degree 11 over ๐”ฝ3(t)\F_3(t). Non-example: โ„\R is not a global field, because it has infinite degree over โ„š\Q and has characteristic 00. Non-example: โ„‚(t)\C(t) is not a global field, because its field of constants โ„‚\C is not finite. The global function fields are exactly the function fields of smooth projective curves over finite fields.
